Proposal To Merge Local SAM Assembly And IBM Ring

To the SAM Assembly 21 members:
Herein is a proposal from the I.B.M. Ring 278.

Background:

I.B.M. Ring 278 has been in existence since 1989.  We have met at various locations in the greater Hartford area.  Our current meeting locale is the Colonnade Banquet Facility in Glastonbury.  The Ring’s format has always been a dinner meeting, followed by members performing an effect which has some relativity to the evening theme.

The Ring membership is about 18 people +/- a couple.  Approximately half of the Ring members also belong to S.A.M. and Assembly 21.

In recent times membership and attendance has been declining, and it has come time to reevaluate the continuance and format of the club.  This subject was discussed at our March 3, 2010 meeting.  The resultant proposal of that meeting had unanimous approval of all Ring members in attendance and is outlined below.

At least one other club has taken this approach, “Dallas Magic Clubs” is comprised of a local SAM Assembly and a local IBM Ring.  You can look at their web page www.dallasmagic.org for further information on this concept.

Please take some time to review this proposal.  All questions and concerns will try to be addressed.  It is the intent not to have a long meeting discussing this proposal at the March or April meeting so as not to delay the lecturer scheduled for each meeting.  The May meeting will open the floor for discussion and hopefully a vote of SAM 21 members.

  • Ring 278 proposes a combined club of I.B.M. / S.A.M.
  • Members have the choice of belonging to either S.A.M. , I.B.M. or both.  Membership to both organizations will not be required.
  • Treasuries of both clubs will be combined.
  • One local annual dues amount will be established regardless of membership status.
  • Northern Connecticut Assembly 21 will keep its name and charter, as will Ring 278.  Both clubs will meet simultaneously at Angelo’s on Main on the second Monday of each month excluding December.
  • Ring 278 will forego its previous format of dinner required and leave it to the decision of the member to join for dinner (as Assembly 21 members do now).
  • Officer positions will be filled one of two ways.
    • If the member holding or seeking office is a member of both SAM and IBM he/she will serve in that capacity for both clubs.
    • If a member holding or seeking office is a member of only one SAM or IBM, a co-position will be filled for that office to fulfill the national requirements.
  • It will be necessary to develop a name for the combination, e. g. Central Connecticut Magic Clubs.  This does not take anything away from either existing club.  SAM Assembly and IBM Ring are still two distinct branches of their respective organizations. They would be meeting together under the combined name.  Separate Assembly/Ring reports would go to the respective periodical, as would separate membership lists.

Benefits of combining clubs:

  • Increased number of members for participation, sharing ideas, camaraderie.
  • Additional funds in treasury to support club events.
  • Additional member resources for club events.

Please read this over and be prepared to discuss this at the May meeting with an eye toward a vote either at the May or June meeting.
