Magical Coincidences, Two Nice Guys, and A Small World
submitted by VP Dan Sclare

Please follow along.  It is the weekend of September 13th.
A few weeks ago I come across a post from a SAMtalk dated April, 2008.
It mentions these new Frixion pens where heat makes the ink disappear.  I go out and buy these cool pens.  I share their magic with my compeers at our September meeting.  A few days later a compeer who is also a member of the IBM loans me the September issue of his Linking Ring because it has an article about these pens.
Saturday, September 13th, I mark some dollar bills with one of the pens in preparation for showing some magic with the flame from a lighter at Water Fire, in Providence, RI, to my girl friend’s family.  After watching a man juggle with fire, I decide that this is the right moment to show my magic with one of the dollar bills.  Just as I am about to begin, I look up, and in the crowd of people there by the river, I spot the author of the April SAM Talk post.  I stop what I am doing and walk over to this guy.  As I am doing this my girlfriend’s daughter-in-law, Kelly, realized that she knew this man as well.  I bring him over to meet the people I’m with and start again to show them the trick.  Kelly interrupts and asks if he remembers her?  They both worked in a restaurant, Dave and Buster’s, there in Providence.  She was a waitress and he was a balloon twister.  Kelly reminded him of the night he comforted her after some customers were rude to her and that he spoke up for her to the customers.  Of course he remembered her.  I now show everyone the magic with this dollar bill and flame, and they are impressed.  I then tell them that he was the guy that told my about this trick in SAMtalk.
      Please stay with me.
That Sunday morning back home in Vernon, CT, I’m reading the rest of the loaned magazine.  There on page 8 is an article by the editor about coincidences.  That is what prompted me to write this.
The nice guy who loaned me his magazine is our Assembly 21 Treasurer Walt Umberfield, and the other nice guy, the SAM Talk poster, is our National President Bruce Kalver; small world!

Compeers Perform for Veterans at Rocky Hill VA Home
submitted by VP Dan Sclare

On a beautiful sunny day, six compeers from Assembly 21 performed stage and close up magic for hundreds of veterans and volunteers on the campus of the Rocky Hill Veterans home.
We entertained the guests between the hours of 11AM and 2 PM. We each did a ten-fifteen minute stage act. In between each stage acts we did walk around magic for the veterans and the volunteers.
We were very well received and were invited back to perform during the winter inside their new health center. We are looking forward to going back to help out again and entertain our veterans. We had a great time doing it, too!
The six compeers were Kevin Aust, Angelo Chirico, David Garrity, Charlie Hayden, Dana Ring, and Dan Sclare.
